Neuropsychology Services

Neuropsychologists are trained to understand the relationship between the brain and behaviour/emotions. They focus on how these relationships can be applied to the diagnosis of known or suspected brain disorders, the assessment of associated cognitive (thinking) and behavioural/emotional functioning, and their rehabilitation/treatment. This practice offers neuropsychological diagnostic, assessment and rehabilitation services across the age span for children, adolescents and adults.

The type of problems that the neuropsychological services offered by the practice can help diagnose include:

  • Cognitive (thinking) problems and behaviour/mood changes secondary to traumatic brain injury (including concussions), stroke, brain tumours, brain cancers, infectious and inflammatory processes (e.g. meningitis, encephalitis, cerebral malaria, HIV), seizure disorders, demyelinating diseases (e.g. multiple sclerosis), and substance abuse.

  • Dementia.

  • Neurodevelopmental and learning disorders.

  • Medical conditions that are impacting on cognitive skills.

  • Pre- and post-neurosurgical cognitive impairment and behavioural/emotional  problems.

The neuropsychological assessment services can thus help to determine inter alia:

  • The underlying cause of cognitive (thinking) and emotional problems in cases where the diagnosis is uncertain.

  • The pattern of cognitive strengths and weakness in domains such as information processing speed and capacity, psycho-motor skills, attention, memory, speech and language,  problem-solving, and decision-making.

  • Whether cognitive and behavioural problems are likely to resolve or progress.

  • What can be done to treat or minimise cognitive difficulties.

  • If the person is able to resume their studies or return to work and if so, what rehabilitation strategies will support this.

  • Whether a person is able to return to, or continue driving.

  • The type of support that the family can provide to assist the person with their cognitive, behavioural/emotional problems.

  • The type of rehabilitation/treatment programme required.

The practice also offers neuropsychological rehabilitation services that aim to ameliorate the cognitive, emotional/behavioural, and psychosocial consequences of a brain injury/disease or decline in brain functioning due to a neurological disorder. Management and treatment programmes include a mix of interventions tailored to the needs of each individual and include individual and group therapy, cognitive retraining, and family counselling and support.
